New tracks from Give and Grow!

I’ve been MIA for the last month on the internet because of all the prep work I’ve been doing to launch my debut album, Give and Grow. I’m excited to let you know that two tracks are now posted on Soundcloud and CBC Music! Go take a listen: https://soundcloud.com/katiedutemple

There are lots of other exciting things that I will be revealing in the next couple of weeks, like album artwork (designed by Nick Counter), Toronto CD release details, a music video and a few other things I’ve been working on. In the meantime, go enjoy those new tracks! Share them, blast them, do what you need to do.

Photo shoot with Chloe Norman

I had the absolute best time with Chloe Norman last week taking photos for my upcoming release. I have a really hard time looking natural during photo sessions, as evidenced by all of my class and family photos throughout the years. Usually, I look like this. Chloe really made me laugh and was able to get a bunch of really beautiful photos of me just hanging around looking out of windows. I also need to mention that my friend Andrea taught me how to do my makeup for this shoot and in general because I can barely put mascara without getting it all over my eyelid. She did such a good job that my sister didn’t believe me when I said I did it myself. Score!

These are going to be posted all over the place (they’re up on Facebook, Twitter etc.) and hopefully will appear if and when I start getting reviews and interviews in different places. I’m particularly thrilled that Chloe was able to capture that feather fascinator so well, because it ties in really nicely with the album artwork (some sneak peaks will be coming soon).

If you’d like to check out more of Chloe’s work – and I suggest you do – you can find it at chloenorman.com. I found the feather fascinator on Etsy from this beautiful shop run by Jade, who was a dream to order from. You can purchase her creations here.

Roots and shoots

Lots of great news happening around here. First of all, the album is DONE! I can’t believe it’s been close to a year in the making, but I will be pressing CDs this week. It sounds amazing and the artwork is just gorgeous. I’m so proud of it and thankful for everyone who went above and beyond to make this a really great record. We’ll be releasing a single soon, so keep those ears to the ground.

Secondly, I’ll be shooting my very first music video today with the band and some good friends at Major Street Productions who have offered to help me out. I need to start googling synonyms for ‘excited’ because that seems to be the only thing I’m feeling these days. Not too sure when the release date will be, but I’m so glad it’s not going to rain today because we’re going to be outside all day.

AND finally, Robb and I recorded a couple videos last week and I’ve uploaded them to my YouTube channel (one is posted below). Our duo set is shaping up quite nicely and if you’d like to come hear us, we’ll be playing at the Tranzac on Wed. July 7 at 7:30 as part of my monthly residency there. Caylie Staples, a long time friend and musical partner, will be playing some of her ethereal compositions and will even sit in on a few tunes of mine.

NXNE wind down and press

What a great week! NXNE was a lot of fun and I was so ecstatic to finally be a part of it. A little press too ain’t so bad. For those who missed it, here’s my interview with Ryan from The Examiner:

And I just got word that FERNTV caught our show and had a great time. We were an editor’s pick and compared the likes of Erykah Badu and Sade.

I’ll be doing a full feature with INTune Magazine on June 28, where we’ll be talking about the new album and a bunch of other things. Speaking of the album, there’s some really, really big news coming down the pipeline in the next few days. I can’t wait to share it with everyone.

Shows, shows, shows

It’s spring! It feels like Toronto changed overnight into flowers, sunshine, blue skies and no jackets. I’ve been hibernating for the past few weeks, but no more. As I step out of my cocoon, I have lots of great show announcements to share with you.

I’m really ecstatic to announce that I was accepted to play a showcase for NXNE! This will be my first time as a performer in the festival and I can’t wait to be a part of it. Come out to hear a new song and bop your head to the favourites.

In other news, Robb and I have been working on a duo set that we will be debuting on May 19 at the Holy Oak. We’ll be opening the night for Michael Tobin (a former band member and stellar composer/musician) and Jos Fortin (delicately beautiful singer/songwriter).

I will also be starting a monthly residence at the Tranzac in June that will run the first Wednesday of the month (except July) for the summer and maybe beyond. I’m particularly excited about this set of shows because of all the great acts I’ll be able to invite along. June will feature Lisa Ribout as the opener. This immensely talented woman fronts the band 10,000 Hours but will be playing acoustic material for everyone. Robb and I will reprise our duo set for this show.

And finally, this Saturday I’m singing at Poetry Jazz Cafe in Kensington. Material includes, but is not limited to, Erykah Badu, Robert Glasper Experiment and D’Angelo. This will be my first gig singing soul and I’ve been busting my ass for the last month and a half to make sure I do it justice. Come out for a drink and some baby makin’ music this Saturday.

Be on the lookout for Facebook events for exact timing and cover chargers for the shows above. More info can also be found in my “Shows” section.

Exciting news

What a week. I’m excited to announce that the Ontario Arts Council is graciously going to fund my debut album, Give and Grow! I couldn’t believe it when I opened the letter, it was such an incredible feeling to finally get a grant. Thank you to the OAC for their support and belief in my project. It looks like the release will be happening in September, which I’m busy organizing. I’ve got some great things planned, so stay tuned.

In other news, I have a show with the band coming up on April 10th at Free Times that should be a lot of fun. We have an hour set – the longest set we’ve played in a while – starting at 11. The whole thing is hosted by Music City North, who put on some great shows. More info is available on the Facebook event here: https://www.facebook.com/events/432420813510694/

New Photos

I recently had the pleasure of having photos taken by two good and extremely talented friends. The first set is from my show at the Horseshoe Tavern, taken by Laura Crowell. I can’t believe how good she made me look! As some people know, I’m not the most photogenic person in the world. If I’m moving around or talking, most of the photos end up looking like I’ve just had dental work and half of my face is still frozen. This speaks volumes to Laura’s talent because I’m smiling in almost ALL of the photos. I couldn’t believe it.

Here’s one of my favourites. The rest are in the ‘Photos’ section or on Facebook.

The second set of photos are from a photo shoot I did at my house with Rob Walsh and his lovely assistant Elli Weisbaum. I felt totally comfortable working with these two and I think the photos turned out excellently. Below is one from my apartment building’s fire escape. The rest are also in the ‘Photos’ section. It should be mentioned that after we finished up, we played Little Big Planet Karting for a few hours. Best photo shoot ever!

In other news, I’m about to go into my first mixing session this weekend for Give and Grow and I can’t believe it’s all starting to come together. I’ve been singing some of these songs for five years and I just want to get them out there. It’ll be worth the wait, you’ll see.

One week to go

With less than a week to go, I’m starting to gear up for this upcoming gig at the Horseshoe. To help promote the show (and talk to some great people who love music), I’ll be doing a short interview on Friday at around 6:30 with INtune Radio. Check it out here.

If you haven’t seen it yet, feast your eyes on this poster Nick Counter made for me. It reminds me of a Polyphemus moth. I’ve been postering a lot in the last few weeks, in spite of the kooky weather we’ve been having. Damn you snow!

Big show announcement!

Happy New Year!

After an incredible experience recording my debut album, Give and Grow, and a restful December, I’m really excited to let everyone know that my first show of the year will be part of Nu Music Nite at the Horseshoe Tavern on Tuesday, February 5.

I don’t have details about the line up quite yet, but I’ll be starting the night out at 8:40 sharp. The band and I are working on a new song for the gig, so come out and to hear some brand new material. Did I mention it’s free? It’s FREE. Take a look at it on Facebook.
